ABOUT ME!
HIHI HELLO!
Mouseling's 100 Questions for Webmasters
TO TOP

- 1. Please introduce yourself.
- Hi! I'm Jaz/crumg! You already know this because you are reading this on my about page.
- 2. How long have you been making websites?
- I learned HTML in November 2024, but had been making carrds and wix websites for many years before that.
- 3. And what got you into the hobby?
- Neocities! I can't remember how I discovered it but I remember it being the final kick I needed because I was getting insanely frustrated at the lack of freedom I had with website creators (Wix is my worst enemy, we have history.)
- 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
- Personal websites that encapsulate the personalities of the person who coded them! I especially love sites that you can tell are growing passion projects that get updated often. I am obsessed with seeing everyone's creativity.
- 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
- I do a quick sketch of my layouts before jumping in and have my reference images ready (because I take a lot of inspo from different 2000s web design elements) and am usually able to craft the site perfectly as I envisioned.
- 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
- Lazer-Bunny , Epsimyte , Human Finny , Cherubiims , and Robotic Operating Buddy!
- 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
- Seeing my vision come together piece by piece. I also love being able to look at my progress from my visual layouts to how much neater my code is now aswell.
- 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
- Javascript. HTML and CSS just clicked for me, but JS is NOT clicking :-( I would be so powerful if I could actually absorb what I try to learn
- 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
- Most of the time yes, I do themed pages for my specific topic ones but the main pages share the same style. I'm so jealous of the people who have completely different vibes for each page but I just can't get myself to

- 10. How confident are you with CSS?
- Extremely! My confidence really upped itself once I got to grips with flexbox. I am unstoppable. Check out Flexbox Froggy it's what finally got it to click for me!!
- 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
- I do now! Had to Google it because of this questionnaire LMAO
- 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
- I'm so basic but I love a good <div>
- 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
- Kill the <body> margin and use flexbox to center my MainContainer. Then I give the <body> a cuter background so my eyes don't burn from the default white :-)
- 14. Do you know JavaScript?
- NO *runs away crying like anime girl*
- 15. How about PHP?
- No but I am very interested in learning it once I get my shit together and figure out JavaScript!
- 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
- Yes! My website is fully based on the 2001 Nintendo Website! With a bit of Windows 98 sprinkled in there too
- 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
- Both really, It feels wrong having empty pages. But at the same time I wont make any page content before the body design is done..
- 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
- Yess I own crumg.co.uk that links to my more internet persona / brand site. I am tempted to get this site a custom domain someday though
- 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
- I LOVE THEM. I think now more than ever people need to keep the old internet close to their hearts. People bringing back owning the internet instead of feeding addictive social media is so community driven and heartwarming to see.
- 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
- Yuh
(I have no errors if thats what this is saying) - 21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
- I LOOVE GRAPHICS SO MUCH they are such cute little nods to peoples interests and personalities. I have a big collection of them myself
- 22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
- They are awesome for finding new ones to download!
- 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
- I think I would probably end up in the same place but maybe be based on a different 2000s website
- 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
- Not in a negative way really, I am very confident in my skills to design whatever I please. I get inspired looking at other people's sites. I think being able to have little nods to all of the people I looked up to while learning is part of what makes this website so personal to me. It just drives me to do even more (the only negative thing is I end up going "UGHH I wish I could download knowing JavaScript into my brain" looking at peoples sites at times)
- 25. What text editor do you use?
- Visual Studio Code for life babyy!
- 26. Why do you use that one?
- I love the customisability of the program, every little thing can be adjusted to my liking. I have the perfect font just for the code, It's the perfect size, I have my sidebars perfectly set up, and I love the theme library.
- 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
- I host on-site. I encourage people to do the same, living in the UK through the Online Safety Act shit has damaged a lot of websites. Imgur shut itself down to UK users instead of complying with ID Verification so UK users cannot see any images hosted there without a VPN Extention. If you do host off-site do your research because it might end up blocking your site to people who would have loved to enjoy it!
- 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
- I'm not very aware on what the debates are but I don't think people should be harassing eachother for being on either. I don't know much about Nekoweb but it seems like a similar community, let's all hold hands and code together.
- 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
- As of writing this (30/09/2026), This website is using 0.8% (397.16 MB) of the 50GB storage limit
- 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
- Yes, I currently use GitHub to update my site from VSCode directly so I always have my files on my computer. BACK UP YOUR SHIT PEOPLE!! You never know what will happen!
- 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
- Both are interesting and beautiful in their own ways, I appreciate simple websites and love to see how people can still have unique websites with minimal decor, but I'm personally a sucker for visuals.
- 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
- I try to stick to consistent colour palettes because when I used to wing it it would drive me insane having to colour pick things constantly. Using variables for my colour palettes changed my life. I enjoy working on this website a bit more than the crumgsite because my crumg name doesn't have many different colours and is a pretty repetitive wheel of oranges and yellows.
- 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
- Never. I think I will be making websites until the day I die, this is my favourite hobby I have ever had and I have been so much happier. Learning HTML did wonders for my self confidence and I can confidently say this hobby changed my life
- 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
- I wish I had more webmaster friends, I try to encourage everyone I know and talk to to make their own websites but its a slow rolling ball LOL I have sucessfully convinced my Mum to begin learning though even if she doesn't have much free time to work on things
- 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
- Yes, I yap about it to everyone who will listen
- 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
- I go through phases of focusing on other projects for a few weeks but when I get back into it I go back HARD and am pretty consistent with updates for a while. I do however write blog posts most of the time at least once a month. I for sure update this more than the crumgsite
- 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
- I haven't changed the visual design of this website, and I have changed my crumgsite layout twice. The most I do is re-code things just to make the behind the scenes neater and better done but nothing visually changes.
- 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
- Me focused! and the crumgsite is hobby-focused in the way it hosts my internet persona and artist side.
- 39. Do you do web design professionally?
- I do not, the only way I would is make layouts and templates and sell them on Ko-Fi. I could never do commission work I am too inconsistent
- 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
- Kind of answered that in the previous question oopsies. I am a leatherworker! While not "officially" employed I work the events my Mum works as her right hand man and helper. And the best part is that means I get to go to three comic cons a year for FREE!
- 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
- Not socially, but I email companies a lot to ask questions not stated on their website or to avoid the live chats. I will always prefer an email over a phone call *shudders*
- 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
- I used to be a Twitter addict but slowly stopped posting and moved away when I began creating websites, the only social media I really post to is Instagram because I want to work towards growing an Artist Alley stall and need to be known somewhere.
- 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
- My entire social life is on Discord, I don't talk in public servers but my closest friends of 8+ years are all online. It's not something I ever see myself being able to move on from
- 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
- Yes! I just listen to my main playlist while I work. I pause when I need to lock in and think though.
- 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
- I have a few! I have this one which is personal and has the most content, the crumgsite which is, as I've said in previous questions, a hub for my internet presence, and A Guide to the Uncanny which is the hub for my horror worldbuilding passion project.
- 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
- Not in the slightest, this is for anything and everything I want to create
- 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
- I think this site is true to my personality, even my exaggerated persona used for streams / content isn't that out there. I have always been described as a real life cartoon character LOL
- 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
- Not yet!
- 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
- Yes! Though I feel I can't give a true opinion since I haven't known anything other than the current versions
- 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
- Using site templates as a complete beginner. Learn from scratch! There has been so many times where people's code is an absolute mess because they just paste in templates without learning proper file layouts or anything. I know it sounds crazy but it's so much easier to learn from scratch than try to learn through editing someone else's code.
- 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
- Peeking at other website's code! Ctrl + U will most of the time open the source code, and Ctrl + Shift + I will open Inspect Element. In Inspect Element you can press the button in the top left and hover over any element on the site to see its HTML and CSS. I would not have learned half of what I know if it wasnt for this. To be curious on how someone did something and be able to see all of the behind the scenes is awesome and I encourage people to be nosey!
- 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
- I think I use a decent balance of both. I try to use important ones like <header> , <nav> , <main> , and <section> when I can though.
- 53. Do you consider different browsers?
- Not really... Sorry firefox users... I should really think about this more but it bulks up my CSS files so much and its like learning a whole new language at times
- 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
- I use Opera GX with Chrome as the browser thing but I wouldn't convince anyone to use it really LMFAO I am very aware there are better browsers out there but I like my bulkiness
- 55. And what OS are you on?
- Windows 10 for life, death to Windows 11.
- 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
- I would rather shoot myself in the balls then dip them in vinegar than use Windows 11.
- 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
- The crumgsite is but this one unforunately isn't. I tried to make it mobile-friendly but the layout was just too complex to translate into a mobile version. I probably could but at this point it would mean re-coding way too much. But mobile compatibility wasn't as scary as I thought It would be! It's pretty simple once you start implementing flexbox in your page layouts
- 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
- I don't feel strongly one way or another really, I think there should be a clear button to pause the music though especially if it's louder music. Calm background music and ambience is nice to see though
- 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
- I am absolutely in love with the concept of webrings, they were actually one of the reasons I started this hobby. I am in a few! It was awesome finally finishing my webrings page and sending those first applications.
- 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
- NOT YET AS OF WRITING THIS but I have many MANY plans. I love seeing statistics. If you have a shrine about a game I want to see how many hours you have and how many achievements you have and tell me why you love it so much, if its shows I want to know your favourite and least favourite characters, tell me your favourite episodes and seasons. I LOVE DATA.
- 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
- I wouldn't think so, but I dont really care even if they are. Be cringe and free.
- 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
- I don't think I really think about that, my ideal website is whatever will fit all of the topics I want to add without feeling like im restricted by the theme.
- 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
- Yes! Most of the assets I have drawn on this website are the tiny hardly recognisable parts. Its less drawing and more editing though for this one. I drew more of the assets on the crumgsite
- 64. What are your favourite resource sites?
- I am working on a resource masterlist as of writing this but my most used resources are w3schools , CSS Gradient , The Web Design Museum , and this specific Flexbox Chart
- 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
- Blanking out while working and realising what I just coded is a complete mess and having to re-do it. I am working to clean up my CSS and have less unnecesarry lines of code
- 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
- Be consistent! Think about how you learn best. I worked on my website as I was learning and it helped a lot to absorb what I was learning by putting it into use immediately. DON'T GIVE UP!!
- 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
- I do. I keep my universal CSS in a style.css file that is linked to every page with the same layouts, then I keep the individual page CSS in the <style> tag
- 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
- Assuming this means Iframes, I find them to be quite buggy and hard to navigate when someones entire page is built with them. I use JQuery loads to import stuff from other pages instead.
- 69. How about table-based layouts?
- I dont have a strong opinion either way! A lot of old websites were coded like that, I just think it's impressive to be able to keep track of all of that code LMAO
- 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
- It depends on the page Im coding but I find myself laying things out in three columns most of the time. However I do this with flexbox not the actual CSS column variable
- 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
- I think I spend an equal time on both, I work on them both at the same time so I wouldn't really know If I spent more time on one or another.
- 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
- I have not! I don't think I really ever will either, I love CSS.
- 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
- Yes OFTEN. I want to start making layouts to sell because I can't have my site be three different themes at once :-(
- 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
- I'm definitely no longer a beginner in HTML / CSS but I wouldn't know if I'd call myself advanced either. I don't think I can improve further than I am without learning JavaScript
- 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
- Oh every time all of them, any interesting layouts I'm always opening Inspect Element. Even on non-personal web sites I am very nosey
- 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
- ALL HAIL W3SCHOOLS 🙌
- 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
- Only sometimes because I find it just impacts my future self when I am trying to edit the code, again, life changed after learning flexbox
- 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
- Kill them. I used to use them before I understood flexbox and I just always had so so many issues. The only time I use floats now is to align images in marquees or when I am purposefully being lazy. LEARN FLEXBOX PEOPLE IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
- 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
- I always use px even if it's not the best way of doing it, I like things to be pixel perfect. I use percentages if I'm aligning things to fit perfectly into containers though
- 80. Do you have a favourite font?
- W95FA and 8-bit Operator
- 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
- I would be up for trying anything once! But I feel like it might not work out for me because everyone has their own way of coding and I like to be consistent
- 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
- YES It's my main source of inspiration, I love it. The neocities browse page is one of my most visited pages I swear, and before this when it was still an option, the StrawPage browse too
- 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
- I have a folder of my favourite sites, I would be absolutely honoured to know anyone loved my site enough to bookmark it
- 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
- The little differently designed containers, even if they are visually the same as the 2001 Nintendo ones I am very proud of how I managed to code them with modern HTML
- 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
- Yes I love tech, I have a few old consoles and MP3 players I would like to use more. I love my childhood PS3, XBOX360, Wii, and 3DS with all of my heart
- 86. How often and for how long are you online?
- I am on my computer pretty much all day every day, but not always technically online. I play singleplayer games a lot and make Excel databases
- 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
- People like me who struggle to make friends and browse the net in hopes of finding their people
- 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
- Not really, I sometimes use XHTML practices in my HTML (like trying to close empty tags and use proper quoting) but I dont think I'd ever look into it further than making my HTML neater
- 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
- No but it's something I would like to look into in the future
- 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
- I have no idea what those are actually
- 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
- YES I love data. Even if the visit counters arent entirely accurate I love seeing that little number go up and knowing people have seen my site
- 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
- I don't know if Reddit counts in this sense LMFAO, other than that no. But I frequent r/N24 because it's a lovely community that makes me feel so seen
- 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
- I said this in a previous question but I write my code in Visual Studio Code and then upload it directly to Neocities through a github integration (dont ask me how it works because I completely winged the tutorial)
- 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
- I hope so, I don't think I do IRL though. And yes people do haha but I think that's just because my parents are awesome
- 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
- No not in the slightest, I look back on my old code and laugh at my prior thought process. Never be ashamed of what you created when learning, and never delete anything. You will regret not being able to look back on your progress
- 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
- Never. I actually had one of my top inspirations shut down their site completely when they couldn't update it anymore and it shattered my heart, I will always advocate for archiving because you never know the impact you have had on strangers
- 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
- I cannot keep my mouth shut LMFAO I love sharing my life
- 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
- My bestie and brother from another mother is Dino who currently has an unfinished site but will be working on it when we can body double once more 💪 It's going to be so awesome his vision is going to be worth the wait
- 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
- I don't oops.. PNGs for life.. But I do shrink down files sometimes when they are bigger than they need to be
- 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
- I absolutely loved answering these and will totally do more questionnaires if I find any more!
A huge list of all of my interests! These are in NO PARTICULAR ORDER. Favourites are highlighted!
